HND Graded Unit
The Graded Unit is typically aimed normally to steer and guide students to be considering developing a career based focus and approach to their presentation where I tend to go against the grain and being a mature student am guided more by self interest focusing in furthering my understanding and intense curiosity of sound and its’ effects in an observational, researching and developmental way.
I am hoping that my own spiritual journey with sound will evolve to produce a larger picture of showcasing the potential benefits of considering the value of sound in our everyday lives. To help others appreciate how sound can debilitate or contribute to so much more than they realise.
Unlike sight sound is often taken for granted until one suffers loss or deafness. Most people do not realise the effects that sound in the environment can bring to their levels of concentration, learning experiences, relationships, memory, health and well-being.

I feel sad that people feel so much pressure to perform to fit in with a traditional expectation of finding a career having two point 5 kids and 2 family cars, holiday abroad, designer clothes and an endless feeling of not ever succeeding or having enough of what is portrayed as the norm. Being targeted by intensively mind controlling marketing techniques which deviously raise the bar of expectation and cost.
Some would say, What does this have to do with sound? Well when people become so be-trodden with all the contributing factors of reaching targets, following intensive curriculum's, and trying to keep up with such a high standard of traditionally embroiled expectational living people often set themselves up for, exhaustion, illness or feelings of failure and forget about perceptions and quality of existence.
Our senses are what we have to measure, guide, and protect us yet it’s almost like people have become self complacent, negligent or comfortably numb and forgotten how to appreciate their abilities, appreciation and consideration in using them as a guide to create a richer form of being and caring.

I have experience through the living in this world with Asperger's from being a child to being a mother as to how much little time people allow for processing and living in a sensory world. To the point where it seems no-one cares or understands or wants to. Everyone is so busy on the treadmill of trying to keep themselves out of debt and meeting deadlines. By the way I am not judging but purely observing.

I have witnessed friends, family, fellow students all suffer through trying to keep up. They are either highly medicated to try and live through a situation rather than take a step back and realise that they can change it without feeling they have failed but realising that they have actually just been trapped in an illusion of what they think must be.

For someone living with Autism getting through the day in a sensory world is difficult enough without worrying about what kind of designer clothes to wear.

I have chosen three projects as part of my graded unit which reflect the skills I have learnt and the knowledge I have gained during my fist year of the HND course. These are 'Anatomy of the Ear', 'Home is Where the Heart is' and 'RA MA DA SA'.
