I decided to show initiative by transferring the skills I had gained from the mandatory core units during the college term and created an opportunity a home that would reflect these. So over the two week Christmas holiday period I planned to re-configure my digital audio
workstation using external connections and configuring parameters for MIDI and Audio and create an original multi-track recording.

I wanted to replace some old faulty MIDI cables that I had been using to connect my digital piano and electronic drum kit to my audio interface. So I spent time before the holiday online reading reviews and recommendations. I decided it would be best to purchase two new high quality MIDI cables this time to replace the old faulty ones.

I also wanted to use a microphone that would be best suited to recording vocals and solo instruments. I decided to spend time researching what would be the best type and gained knowledge in relation to the different common types of constructions, polar and frequency response patterns microphones.
I discovered that the Neumann TLM 103 a transformerless cardioid condenser microphone with its large diaphragm condenser capsule has a gentle presence boost for a direct sound with definition and ultra-low noise would be a good all-rounder quality for what I had in mind because its direct yet refined sound is perfect for vocals, and solo instruments.

The capsule has a flat frequency response up to about 5 kHz, and above that, a wide flat 4 dB presence boost. The large wire mesh head grille protects the capsule from plosive sounds and effectively prevents pop noises. These characteristics are achieved without resorting to corrective resonance effects. Therefore, the microphone maintains an excellent impulse response and reproduces the finest details of music and speech without coloration.

So having decided the Neumann TLM 103 would be the best for the production I booked it out from the college along with a stand and pop filter for stability, positioning and extra protection from plosive and pop sounds.

Even although this was a home project I still felt it beneficial to create a written plan so I could identify what I wanted to achieve to gain direction and preparation for what resources would be required. I also created a detailed wiring diagram to keep a record of my set up and an equipment list so that I could ensure I had everything I needed before the end of term.

I recorded, mixed and edited using the Ableton 10 and Pro-tools 12 digital audio software programmes.

During the recording of the vocals and instruments I kept a close eye on the input meter gain levels to make sure they were not clipping and experimented with microphone placement to achieve the best desired results. For example, when I recorded guitar I found It was best to keep the microphone pointing from above to the front of the twelfth fret.
Having a strong personal belief and interest in the healing benefits of singing and chanting mantras I wanted to record the Ra Ma Da Sa mantra within this project. The words to this mantra are: Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung. Ra means the sun and connecting with that frequency gives you energy. Ma means the moon and it aligns you with receptivity. Da is the the energy of the Earth, grounding you in your roots.
Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung are eight sounds that stimulate the Kundalini flow in the central channel of the spine (sushmuna). This invokes healing and has an energizing effect upon our neurological and endocrine systems. This new level of energy in the body can give a metabolic adjustment.

During the mixing and editing stage I decided to try out new techniques and introduce new concepts using dynamic and time based sound effects.
I brought together the finished sound track with some visual elements in the Sony Vegas video editing programme. I imported the sound track and some video clips that I acquired from the ‘Vikings’ series and edited the parts which I felt were in keeping with the sound elements of my sound track. Then uploaded the finished production using professional format to YouTube Channel linked to WIX and FB.
